Educational facilities must deal with EMI when they build medical schools, research laboratories and other spaces in which sensitive equipment will be used. Hospitals are often part of a medical school; they face the same EMI issues described in Research Facilities and Medical Facilities.
In addition to risks to research tools, safe levels of EMF exposure by children and adults is the subject of many debates and quite a bit of research, but scientifically provable research is difficult and there is no agreement in this field.Absent a definitive resolution to possible health risks from EMF and while research continues, several states have or are considering adoption of “precautionary measures” to minimize student exposure to elevated levels of AC magnetic fields in schools.
California for example, is presently considering a policy that will require new schools be sited in locations that do not exceed a background level of 1 mG. The policy also calls for school districts to develop a “Magnetic Field Management Plan” as an integral component of a new school’s design process to insure that EMF levels are minimized throughout occupied areas of the school from internal electrical systems as well as external sources such as passing transmission and distribution lines.
Dr. Jack Saul is one of the foremost experts in the field of EMF risk. Dr. Saul is to FMS and will be on the FMS team for projects which require a thorough examination of health concerns, which is often the case in primary level education.
FMS has assisted numerous school districts in addressing EMF concerns in both new and existing school buildings. FMS is frequently engaged to provide professional guidance to a new school project’s design teams to address potential problems from elevated AC magnetic field levels and assists school administrations with developing Magnetic Field Management Plans. For existing school buildings, FMS regularly conducts site EMF surveys to identify classrooms and other occupied areas with existing elevated AC magnetic field levels and then develops and implements field mitigation measures to lower EMF levels.

To mitigate EMI threat concerns, FMS designed and implemented multiple special magnetic field shielding schemes to lower EMF levels to acceptable, non EMI threat levels.
Over its 20 years, FMS has successfully completed hundreds of EMI projects which included a diverse range of consulting and mitigation services.
