Seattle Children’s Research Institute – Building CURE:

Seattle Children’s Research Institute is currently in the construction phase of ”Building Cure”, a 540,000 square foot research building, which will be dedicated to developing therapies for children with diseases such as Cancer, Type 1 Diabetes and Sickle Cell Anemia. Building Cure will include features such as research labs, a Science Discovery Lab for students and the community to learn about science, as well as the “Cure Factory”, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that will expand SCRI’s ability to translate laboratory discoveries into cell therapies for patients using immunotherapy and gene therapy.

FMS was engaged as the project’s EMI Consultant to conduct an electromagnetic field (EMF) analysis focused on the potentially EMI sensitive surgical suites, laboratories, and research suites that may be affected by internal interference issues, such as power frequency AC (60 Hz) magnetic fields.  A document review and extensive 3-Dimension computer simulation studies were conducted to evaluate EMF emissions from the building’s electrical distribution, mechanical and other systems.  Utilizing the computer simulation data, FMS identified areas which were potentially at EMI risk due to adjacency to EMI sources.  To mitigate EMI threat concerns, FMS worked alongside the design team to integrate several emission reductions strategies into the overall design.

Furthermore, FMS, working in tandem with general contractor (Lease Crutcher Lewis), developed and installed a robust shielding scheme inside the facility to mitigate EMI threat conditions to acceptable, low magnetic field levels.
