A major US Utility was designing a new Control/Operations Center for the dispatch and routing of electrical power, including transmission and generation assets over a large region of the United States. The Utility determined that they should consider Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and Intentional EMI (IEMI) threats to this new facility.

This facility has impact on the following:

  • 500,000 customers
  • 50,000 megawatts of multi-mode generation capacity
  • Generation/Transmission/Distribution of power
  • Enterprise Security

FMS was engaged to provide EMP/IEMI hardening options, with an emphasis on IEMI. FMS researched the IEMI threat portfolio through Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) sources and developed a multi-layer electromagnetic protection plan that would provide sufficient IEMI field attenuation to meet EN55024 equipment guidelines. Proposed approaches also include low/no cost options involving spatial redundancy, logistics and sparing models.

FMS EXPERIENCE

Over its 20 years, FMS has successfully completed hundreds of EMI projects which included a diverse range of consulting and mitigation services.
