FMS Project:

Rice University – BioScience Research Collaborative:

The BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC) building was constructed on the Rice University campus and was designed to facilitate and encourage interdisciplinary interactions among researchers. The 477,000 sq. ft. BRC will enable researchers and physicians from the world’s largest medical center to team up with Rice University scientists and engineers on bioscience and biotechnology research. The BRC is equipped for cutting-edge laboratory, theoretical and computational investigations in eight floors of research laboratories in a base platform that also includes an auditorium, classrooms and seminar facilities. The facility includes a range of advanced imaging equipment including TEM/SEM electron microscopes and NMR’s, therefore, a low electromagnetic environment throughout the research laboratories was essential.

To ensure a low electromagnetic environment, FMS was engaged by the design team to conduct a thorough assessment of the BRC building’s design for EMI interference concerns. An extensive EMF broadband survey was conducted at the site prior to construction, to identify possible EMI threat sources external to the site which included adjacent vehicle traffic, light rail transit (LRT) and existing underground electrical service. Based on results of the EMF site survey, recommendations were made to consider relocation of the existing buried electrical service and placement of most sensitive labs to locations in the new building optimally distant from nearby roadways and the LRT.   FMS conducted an extensive SD and DD level document review which included extensive computer simulation studies to evaluate EMF emissions from the building’s electrical distribution, mechanical and other systems. Utilizing the computer simulation data, FMS identified areas at potential EMI threat risk and recommended measures to mitigate the threat by relocation of certain high current electrical distribution circuits and installation of EMF shielding in the building’s 10th floor Main Electrical Room.

Over its 20 years, FMS has successfully completed hundreds of EMI projects which included a diverse range of consulting and mitigation services.
