Letterman Digital Arts Ltd, a division of Lucas Films Ltd constructed a new Digital Arts Center complex at the site of the former Letterman Army Hospital at the Presidio of San Francisco. The Letterman Digital Arts Center, a 23-acre complex on the northeast corner of the Presidio, houses Lucas Film Ltd., divisions such as Lucas Arts Entertainment and other special effects companies. The 850,000 square foot complex and its campus-like setting contain three state of the art screening rooms plus extensive underground parking garage. As the complex houses extensive and advanced computer, digital motion picture, television, audio and wireless network facilities, concern was expressed during the design phase of the building, that EMI emissions from electrical and other sources internal and external to the site, might present serious interference threats to sensitive equipment.
FMS was engaged to conduct a thorough assessment of the building’s design for EMI interference concerns. An extensive broadband (DC through 8 GHZ) survey was conducted at the site to identify potential EMI threat sources external to the site. A document review and extensive 3-Dimension computer simulation studies were conducted to evaluate EMF emissions from the building’s electrical distribution, mechanical and other systems. Utilizing the computer simulation data, FMS identified multiple areas which were potentially at EMI risk due to adjacency to EMI sources.
In several of the campus buildings, electrical substations and high current distribution equipment were to be located immediately beneath occupied areas containing sensitive equipment, including an extensive Computer Center. Computer simulations indicated that EMF emissions from the electrical equipment might present a significant interference threat to such equipment. To mitigate EMI threat concerns, FMS designed multiple special magnetic field shielding systems to lower EMF levels to acceptable levels
Over its 20 years, FMS has successfully completed hundreds of EMI projects which included a diverse range of consulting and mitigation services.
